How could you possibly think such a thing?

Well, let's see. He must have started before 00:22 (my time) when the genuine answers started to come in, and he posted at 03:03.

If you *really* knew all the answers, it shouldn't take two and a half hours plus to type them in.

Who knows where the time goes first recorded by Fairport Convention (sung exquisitely by Sandy Denny) - any chance of half a point?

Check my smilies, dj. ;) Also check His Majesty's answer to lyrics 30 (already been answered of course). Set Tee? :}

Off topic, I know Sandy Denny did the rounds of all the sixties English folk groups, but I'm not sure about the Strawbs. One of my favourite albums is What We Did on our Holidays, when she was with FC. Thirty plus years after I first heard it, her version of She Moves Through the Fair still sends shivers up my spine. Whenever I played it on community radio I was usually guaranteed of somebody ringing up asking about it. A glorious voice. :ok:

Southie, just a quick word. Scran and I post those quizzes as kind of a pub trivia thing. We don't make any rules about search engines because they would be unenforceable, but the first day or so is mostly an exercise of the 'ol brain cells.
I admire your staying up till 0300 to play though. ;)

Hey Binos, how come you knew the answer to trivia 36? :E ;)

Ahh, I wondered if that would draw a comment!

Like ReynoldsNo1, the useless bits of information floating around inside my head defy logic. But it's all a matter of time and place I think; I suspect that if a graph was made of my correct replies of the history of the quiz, at least 90% of them would be for songs done before 1977 or so. This one must be just on the edge.

For some reason also, whenever I hear the Andrea True Connection my mind automatically spits up Amanda Lear. :O

Judy Dyble - that was it .... "Chelsea Morning".....:\

pigboat
9th Nov 2004, 03:20
She wasn't with the Strawbs very long though, before joining Fairport Convention. She left Fairport for Fotheringay, which coincidentally she helped found. I think she also came back to Fairport for awhile before her death.
There was a brief bio on Denny last Saturday on the Studio Retro program I referred to last week, and they played Who Knows Where The Time Goes. I'd forgotten just what a truly wonderful voice she had.:(

Heh, heh I seem to recall that that song title made up most of the dialogue of ..ahem..those movies back then. :D

Binoculars
9th Nov 2004, 12:19
Must confess Judy Dyble is a new one on me, Chelsea Morning will always stand out as the song that got me interested in Joni Mitchell, and how much pleasure I've had from her over the years! Not, alas, the pleasure that half the male musicians of the 60's and 70's had with her, but my own secret brand which I can relive often.
Err, musically I mean. :O

I also confess that i didn't know Sandy Denny had done a version of Who Knows Where The Time Goes, but it wouldn't have taken a great leap of imagination to realise it. I downloaded it after reading your post, pigboat, and I'll reserve comment till I've heard it a couple more times. I had the Judy Collins version and first impressions are that even though I prefer SD's voice, I still prefer the JC version. But that means I can listen to it another fifteen times before making up my mind, which will not be a hardship. ;)

(For mine, SD has never sounded more like Joni, but more for the guitar perhaps than the voice.)

God love all of 'em!

On the topic of Judy Collins versus English electric folk with a Fairport (but not Sandy Denny) connection:

In 1970 I saw a very early Steeleye Span concert, at which they sang a terrific a capella version of a song I'd never heard before - Amazing Grace.

About three months later I saw them again. They announced their a capella slot, but said that the song they were planning to sing 'has been stolen by somebody else'.

IMHO the number they did in its place - Dylan's Lay Down Your Weary Tune - was even better. After nearly 35 years I tracked it down a couple of months ago on an Ashley Hutchins CD.

Hey, there's only about70 hard core supporters who follow this thread, let's keep it going. It can be our escape from the mindlessness and political to and fro-ing.

You mention Steeleye Span. I saw their concert in Sydney in 1976 or thereabouts. The local tabloid The Daily Mirror (a Murdoch paper even then) was huffing and puffing about a so-called phone-in quiz which offered a "Night of Love" with the gorgeous Maddy Prior as the main prize. I suspect they were huffing mainly because it was the opposition paper that sponsored it, but my memory sometimes plays tricks on me these days.

:}

I know in that dark period of my life a night with MP was worthwhile fantasising about! What a honey..... :ok:

The SSK
9th Nov 2004, 14:10
Was Maddy Prior gorgeous?

To my recollection she always wore those hippy gypsy peasant type outfits that didn't do her any favours. Plus I was never a fan of very long hair.

But, she had (has?) a fantastic voice with a very sexy twist to it and could could play a mean spoons.

Binoculars

Well, I thought she was! She had a lovely face, though I have no doubt that given the spirit of the age (Hawkwind fans anyone?) had you got within lottery-winning distance there would have been an abundance of hair in places you may not have expected it.
