Other threads talk about the Guild of Air Pilots and Navigators awards for the SAR crews.

But also from the GAPAN citations, however, is a quite amazing account of the DHL Airbus A300 that got a missile up its chufti in Iraq last year which led to a total hydraulic loss.

I'm not sure if the link below is the correct address but a search on the GAPAN awards for 2004 will work. Specifically, take a peek at the Hugh Gordon Burge Memorial Award for Captain Genotte and his crew who were faced with an emergency that entailed landing a large multi-engine ac without any flying controls - pretty cool heads if you ask me and well worthy of the accolades.

TVM BOAC - I hadn't been to that site.

Certainly, it does cover most angles there. Nonetheless, for those mil and ex-mil types who don't get time to read all the sites, the DHL incident does need wider publicity.

I would recommend to all to follow BOAC's link and read, with awe and humility, the exploits of that crew. Top drawer skills. Bravo!

As most RAF AT has many destinations in that area, I am sure this incident would be an apt topic for discussion on training days or sim details - if it isn't already.

In fact, I'm suprised it hasn't been given more pages in Aviate - the new 'Joint' (yuk) mil flight safety mag that replaced Air Clues.

Chaps,

Thanks for posting this, and the link to the citation. Having flown a similar type, this makes for stirring reading; indeed, I think it's the first time the true nature of events that day have been catalogued. Thoroughly deserved accolade.:ok:
