Having sucessfully configured my laptop/windows XP to receive faxes using the landline, all telephone calls now go to the computer fax system. Is there a way of setting the computer to distinguish the difference or failing that, how do I uninstall the fax programme? Any help appreciated.

You have set up the computer to recognise incoming calls as fax calls, so the laptop will always activate fax receive when the line is rung. You cannot change this without buying some v expensive hardware called fax detect IIRC.

The obvious way to get round it is to go into fac configuration & turn off enable receive in the the third or fourth dialog box.

What we do here is use two landlines. One for incoming voice calls & one for incoming fax calls. Via a cheap dectsys phone system, both lines are available for outgoing calls & two handests can both pick up inbound calls from the 1st landline. Callers don't know the difference & it works very well.

If you still need to use the fax facility occasionally, you could just uncheck the 'Enable Receive' box (in the Fax Config Wizard) when you don't need to use, rather than uninstalling it completely. Alternatively, you could set it to 'Manual Answer' only, or tell it to only answer automatically after a certain number of rings (say 10-12), which would give you time to answer the telephone if you're in.
