My computer has started to freeze, ie. the mouse is inoperative and the timer icon is in view. All the usual remedies do not seem to work ie. ctrl. alt. /delete. I have to resort to switching off mains power. Any ideas would be welcome.

Can you furnish us with some extra details bd like

What operating system?
Have you installed anything new lately?
Do you have any antivirus installed?
Does the problem occur at any particular time?

If you don't have any AV try going to trend micro (http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/products/housecall_launch.php) and run the free online AV check.

If you have installed something then try uninstalling it.

I am sure you will be bombarded with suggestions if you provide some extra info.

Classic problem! I will mirror the above post and may I also suggest you take a look at the spyware guide sticky at the top and follow the advice - this can usually lead to that sort of thing.

Had the exact same experience. Even replaced the mouse.

I have Windows ME running on a Dell. I formatted the C drive after backing up the files I wanted to keep, and re-installed everything. Computer boots up in 25 seconds now, response time is noticably faster and I have no more freezes. If you use the Internet a lot, you've probably got Spyware or a virus on your Registry...both of which can be hell to remove.

black diamond,

If you follow the guide mazzy1026 suggested:

Guide for eliminating spyware, adware and random popups (http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=117136)

And then list your software (and preferably hardware too) and will see what is causing the problem. ;)

Take Care,

Richard
