£14 MILLION INVESTMENT IN TERMINAL FACILITIES AT BRISTOL INTERNATIONAL ANNOUNCED

Bristol International Airport has today announced that it is to spend £14 million on expansion work to the airport's infrastructure to further enhance its level of customer service. The investment will see an extension of the check-in and baggage reclaim areas, alongside apron development, in order to accommodate continued growth at the airport.

The check-in extension located on the east side of the main terminal will provide sixteen additional check-in desks. The international baggage reclaim hall will also be extended, providing an additional carousel and facilities for oversized baggage.

Bristol International has grown rapidly over the last two years, more than doubling its number of scheduled routes from 16 to 37. In 2004 alone the airport has announced 11 new scheduled routes. In the next twelve months the airport will handle four and a half million passengers, four times the number handled just 10 years ago. Moreover, following the government's recent White Paper on the future of air transport, Bristol International is set to continue its growth in order to serve increasing demand for air services from the South West region.

This announcement is being supported by the South West Regional Development Agency, which has invested £1.5 million towards the infrastructure improvements.

Bristol International's Managing Director, Andrew Skipp commented:
"Bristol International is now widely recognised as the main airport for the South West, and further routes are set to be announced and launched over the next six months. With ongoing route development it is important that we cater for the needs of both business and leisure passengers in the terminal, and enhance the level of customer service.

"We view the backing of the South West RDA as a very important step for the ongoing growth and development of Bristol International. This £1.5 million investment recognises the strategic importance of the airport for the whole of the South West region."

Ian Thompson, Head of Operations at the South West RDA said:
"Bristol International Airport is a key contributor to the South West's growing economy, employing 2,500 staff, and providing key business routes to 37 direct scheduled domestic and international destinations, including the recently announced direct daily flight to New York."

"The airport continues to demonstrate its growing importance to the region and we are keen to support its growth. Through the funding of important infrastructure developments, this investment will enable Bristol International to handle further increases in passengers numbers, which in turn will help to bring long-lasting benefits for the South West region as a whole."

BUT will it be enough at the present rate of growth??

Cheers

good news! BRS has seen amazing growth and the baggage reclaim area has been screaming out for more space for at least 3 years since Go started services there.

terrier21 'announced' this back in August. The link is

Without going back over what is in the prevous thread any expansion of facilities is good news because, although there is usually a feeling of space in the terminal, there is the perception that it won't need an awful lot more flights at 'rush hour' times to spoil this.

The baggage reclaim area, despite being extended to six carousels in total, will certainly benefit from further expansion, although the area surrounding the belts could perhaps be more usefully increased in size rather than extra belts. On occasions it can be a bit of a crush trying to manoeuvre oneself to a suitable position next to a belt.
