EMIRATES Airlines has turned up the heat on rivals Qantas and Air New Zealand with plans to ramp up its Australian and trans-Tasman services.

The Dubai-based carrier will operate four flights a day into NZ from early December offering more than 1000 seats a week on the route.

The move is aimed at snaring passenger traffic and a bigger share of trans-Tasman freight.

Airline officials are said to have been surprised at the high freight volumes that have flowed to the carrier after extending Melbourne operations to New Zealand just a year ago.

The new arrangement, which will involve three flights daily into Auckland and one daily service to Christchurch, which will add a further 258 seats a week to Melbourne- Christchurch services.

The carrier now operates three services a day to Auckland and six times a week to Christchurch.

The new arrangement results from a decision to introduce double daily services between Dubai, Melbourne and Christchurch.

Emirates, which operates 13 flights a week to Melbourne, will introduce the extra non-stop Dubai-Melbourne service from December 6, taking the operation from six weekly to daily.

After Melbourne, the service extends to Christchurch, where it loads for the return leg via Melbourne.

Emirates has recently secured approval to operate double daily services out of Sydney to Dubai via Bangkok from next May.
