The surnames alone are interesting. There are 7,500 of "us" in total, which suggests to me we must all be related if we go back a generation or few. Even more odd: there are two real "Davaar" Stemhalters on a voter's roll somewhere. Well, Well!

43 Surname-only matches, no full-name matches.

All of us worldwide with my particular surname (the original, not the similarly spelt, though unrelated, English name my great-grandfather adopted here in the US) are verifiably related. Y-chromosomal DNA matching, same phylogenetic haplogroup (distinctly Middle Eastern, not Western European), and all that.

UK branch tracks to one individual whose two sons arrived from Istanbul in 1689, settling into the Sephardic Jewish community in London. The family branches descending from him currently live in the UK, USA, RSA, NZ, Israel, Brazil, the Netherlands, Canada and Germany.

Your parents normally bestow your name upon you. Arguably, this unique gift can profoundly affect your future.

A philosophy called Kabalarianism (http://www.kabalarians.com/cfm/your.cfm) has grown up around the idea that character and well being are determined by a name.

Paul Gascoigne, the footballer, would concur, judging by his decision to change his name to G8. He said his name has garnered negative connotations. G8, apparently, "sounds a bit like great, or it does with my Geordie accent", and it even “looks like something which has summits and attracts protest in a range of tongues”

It would appear in selecting this new name he is indeed – unique.

PS I am not Paul Gascoigne :hmm:

142 of me in the UK. I have very "standard" English forename and surname, I'm surprised there are not more. But I'm in the USA. 14188 with the same surname in the UK.

At uni there was a fellow engineering student (different branch and a year behind me) with the same name. We were also both in the Air Force Reserve Officiers Training Corps. No confusion there nor later on active duty. In retirement my parents lived on the same rural mail delivery route (RFD 5) as his parents. We both used our parents' address for some mail - and his parents received the very official urgent letter confirming my reporting date/time for two-week Air Force Reserve duty. Quite a bit of excitement until the delivery mistake was figured out.

Later my namesake built his own home around the corner from my parents, but by then essentailly all my mail went to my own address.

Did all your parents give you "1's" comedy names or something?
The only name I put in that came up with such low results amongst some fairly unusual ones was that of an ex whos mother blessed her with a name fit for a porn star that is almost without doubt unique, and that returned a 0!

One didn't use one's real name obviously. That would be far too common.

Nevertheless, one was enamoured to be offered a choice of 7 number plates ranging in price from £7,995 to £71,000?! They all had an "A" in them too. Perhaps I could simply buy an "A" reg Skoda...?!
