Libyan Arab Airlines is planning to add 24 new aircraft to it's fleet. These will be coming from both Boeing and Airbus. It would be a combination of the A330 and the B777. This due to the fact that the USA have discontinued the economical sanctions on Libya. Logically the Libyans want to take advantage of this new situation.
Has anybody heard of this, and to what level it's true?

What they DO have already is one Airbus 340, painted white.

It is the personal aircraft for Mr. Gaddafi, who prefers this means of transport to the dromedars. Incidentally an ex-colleague of mine went there to be the chief-pilot after his retirement in Austria.

A340? I thought it was an A300-600R registered in Tunesia?
If I am wrong, do you know the registration of the A340? many thanks!

True is that the stop of US-sanctions allows LAA and other Libyan air carriers to buy aircraft from Airbus, Embraer, Boeing, Bombardier, Tupolev and Ilyushin with US-originating engines and avionics. Many types are considered in Tripoli including A319, A320, A321, A330, A340, A350, A380, B767, B777, B7E7, Embraer RJ...., Tu-234, Tu-204, IL-114. BUT, the Libyan finance minister wants to pull through a privatisation of LAA first and then hand over the aircraft purchasing matter to the new owners. Whether the "supreme leader" still wants to have a say or not in such a case no longer is HIS problem then ! -------------:ok:

I thought that the 'supreme leader' used a B707

Yes, the B707 however is operated by LAA. In case of doubt, he however asks for any of the other airplanes they have at hand, just as his "glorious wisdom" dictates.
