Just sending this out as a broad enquiry to get some feedback on possibilities.

I am a CPL(H) and PPL(A) pilot from South Africa preparing to working as a bush pilot, possibly in aviation missions like MAF or Helimission in Africa eventually.

I have been asking around in my area regarding doing maintenance training with a view to eventually being licensed on Airframes and Powerplants, preferrably on helicopters, while still building flying experience?

The feedback has not been to inspiring ... many reasons why I shouldn't do it ... stick to flying and let the AME's do their work etc.

I really want to do the maintenance training to be a more informed pilot, and to be able to do basic maintenance in the field.

Problem is supporting a young family and trying to go in as an entry level apprentice.

Are there possibilities out there to work as a pilot (flying instruction etc. which involves being based mostly at home) while at the same time training in maintenance, and still being able to support a familiy?

I am a heli instructor and just finishing my fixed wing CPL as well.

Need the right aviation company, I suppose. Any ideas out there ... ?
