Another OAL A340 diverted to UK

Just minutes ago TV in Greece reported another OAL340 being diverted to UK due to a bomb threat phone call to a newspaper.

Its seems to be LGAV-KJFK flight again Olympic 411.

Emergency landing for bomb threat plane

An Olympic Airlines plane heading for New York from Athens is due to make an emergency landing in Ireland after a bomb alert.

The incident, the second in three days, was sparked by a telephone call at 1.45pm to a newspaper in Athens which said a bomb would explode within an hour.

"The plane left Athens at 1pm. There was a call to a local newspaper around 3.45pm saying a bomb on the plane would explode in an hour. Nothing has happened," Olympic Airlines spokeswoman Melina Pitta said.

"After a meeting it was decided the plane should make an emergency landing at Shannon in Ireland as it is the nearest airport.

"The plane carrying 295 passengers and 12 crew is heading there now," she added.

Wiser heads than me have justified (and I have accepted the reasoning) the use of fast jets from the RAF to intercept the first Olympic A340 the other day - it was landing in the UK. So, in this second case, with a landing in Ireland, do we assume that as Ireland doesn't have any fast jet assets, this aircraft was just not escorted/intercepted at all ... (eg. by the British or French...) ?

no if you have a suspect 'bomb' on board, then it woulds be classed as an emergency landing. Overall aim is to get the ship down as quiclkly as possible. An emergency landing doesn't always mean the possiblity of fatalities / or damage to the aircraft

If it had been me (and this is pure assumption as I do not have all the facts) I would have declared a mayday which would have necessitated an emergency landing.

Declaring a mayday would make me top priority and allow me to get on the ground as quick as possible.

Why then did the pilot choose to overfly many beautiful French airports such as Lyon, Charlie De Gaulle and some nice long military airfields for an hour whilst the alleged bomb was suspected?. Then dump fuel instead of a slightly overweight landing.

Stelios fancied a look at Engerland cos he doesn't get to go there in his A343 very often!;)
