Although why is it that I get a feeling that the reason for this outbreak of sense is the loud US protests rather than anything anyone in the services or the unions has said?

Nice that the Defence Fire Services, now they are no longer members of HM Armed Forces, can join unions, and hence complain when their jobs are threatened. Have HMG considered this when considering contractorisation? John Pilot Esq might cost less in terms of pension, med support etc, but he could grumble much harder when you try to take his squadron away!
