Valuair to launch services to Perth

SINGAPORE - Singapore-based budget airline Valuair will start flying between Singapore and the western Australian city of Perth by early December, an airline spokesman said on Monday.

Last month, the airline received approval from the Singapore government to fly to Perth once a day and is now waiting for approval from Australia's civil aviation authorities, Valuair spokesman Nilesh Pritam told The Associated Press.

Perth is a popular holiday and study destination for many Singaporeans.

The fare for the new route is yet to be determined but Mr Pritam said it would be 'lower than a full-service airline'.

In March, the carrier said it would offer flights priced 40 per cent cheaper than existing full-service airlines.

Currently, Singapore Airlines and Australia's Qantas are the only carriers servicing the Singapore-Perth route, with round-trip tickets costing about S$700, according to travel agents.

Valuair has been waging a price war with regional competitors Tiger Airways and Thai AirAsia. The three budget carriers have been undercutting each other's fares on the Singapore-Bangkok route, with promotional one-way fares as low as US$0.27 (S$0.46).

Valuair - set up by former Singapore Airlines executives - currently flies to Hong Kong, Jakarta and Bangkok.
