Hi everyone !

I might be going for an interview with Air Japan in october . And yes , that would mean undergoing my first JCAB medical ! Now I am sure some of you have quite interesting stories to tell about the Japanese medical ! Overall , any particular point to be prepared for since they probably have the highest failure rate in the industry ...:uhoh:
Cheers !!

Try doing a search on this forum for "JCAB medical" or something similar .. the Shuttle-commander level requirements of the Japanese have been covered more than a few times over the years in here.

Good Luck,

Squid

Hey guys...I have a couple of questions...

1. Is there a minimum uncorrected vision requirement for the JCAB medical? I hold a Class 1 medical, currently flying regional jets in the states, and wear corrective lenses (i.e. blind as a bat).

2. I don't have a type rating (in any airplane)...what are the chances of non-type rated pilots getting onboard w/ Air Japan for the 767?

3. Which medical is more difficult CX medical or JCAB?

Would love to fly jets in Asia someday...only problem is that I already have a flying job and there seems to be a lot of pilots on the street in Europe and Canada competing for these jobs in Asia. Hopefully, things will continue to pick-up and we all can fly the pacific.

Thanks in advance!

Would love to fly jets in Asia someday You don't have to LIVE in Asia, to fly there, Stereolab.
Living in most parts of Asia means a dramatic change in lifestyle for most non-Asians (and your families), and whilst the allure of "bigger, newer, faster" appeals to many pilots, think of what your sacrifices are going to HAVE to be, to achieve that.

If the $$$'s compensate for the lifestyle you (and your family) are going to lose, you might give it some consideration, but remember, you will NEVER be able to relive those years you lose.
Is there a minimum uncorrected vision requirement for the JCAB medical? I can't specifically answer your question, as I am fortunate enough to not require specs, however there are a couple of expats working here who do, and at least one of them made the same statement about himself as you have - "blind as a bat" without them.

To the guys who have interviews coming up shortly, first off, GOOD LUCK! As the Japanese say, Gambatte (kudasai), which translates to "Go for it!!"
Having reached this stage in the selection process (you obviously have the required experience, and have been recommended by the recruiting agency - and in all likelihood, the Japanese have also looked at your resumes, and requested you be sent), the MAIN thing they will be looking for, from you, is an EAGERNESS to LIVE in Japan; a WILLINGNESS to accept that you will have to adjust to THEIR way of thinking - both at work (they might not operate the aircraft in the same way as your current/previous operator), and in personal life (eg. Japanese bow when they are introduced or meet each other, whereas we shake hands); and ENTHUSIASM to learn....god knows you'll need it!
If there is a sim ride involved, don't worry too much about it - they are more concerned that you have SOME sort of SOPS, or set procedures (which they're going to change later anyway!!).

Once you are told you have a P.E. (medical check), you're almost home if you pass.
Remember, you should expect that you are going to be observed the ENTIRE time, and notes taken, from deadheading across to the interview, and for the entire time before during and after the interview, sim, and P.E. - and on your flight back home again.

Hope you all make it.
:ok: GAMBATTE!!:ok:

Kaptin M,

I just got back from my interview and was cruising through these old posts regarding the JCAB medical. I read them before I left for Japan and tried to apply some of your advice, but really didn't know if it would relate to my situation. Now that I have been through what you write about, your words seem exactly correct. I am waiting to hear the results of my medical.

Keeping my fingers crossed,

BBB

Good on you triple b - and Good Luck.
If you have a problem, they will usually advise you at the time.
My understanding of the long wait at the initial P.E. is because the successful applicants' results are now submitted to the JCAB Medical Board, for perusal and approval by them, as are also renewals.
The Board usually meets only once every month (unless they are on vacation), and so - depending on how soon after the last meeting was held - your final :ok: might take up to almost 2 months. Alternatively, it may be closer to - but usually not less than - 1 month, by the time all of the relevant paperwork in H.O. has been finished.

Hello everybody,

I have a mild/ extremely mild red-green colour deficiency, but am able to pass the Ishihara, Farnsworth D-15, and Lantern colour tests.
Like any other interviews or medicals with new Doctors, I typically show up with a battery of paperwork from an eye specialist stating that my condition is mild, and non-degenerative.
Although I wasn't successful at the final for Cathay years ago, they didn't seem to say that I had medicaled-out. A few years later, they still maintained that there was nothing on my file that would prohibit me from trying again.
My question is as follows: although I make it through the Ishihara, I do make mistakes; so, would I have a chance making it through a Japanese medical?

Thanks,
Azzurri
