AirAsia flies you to Phuket for 29 cents

FOR less than the price of an egg, you can now fly to Phuket.
AirAsia's new 29-cent special deal to launch its one-way flights from Singapore to the Thai holiday island marks a new low in airfares from Singapore.
An egg costs at least 40 cents these days, as the ban on poultry products remains because of avian flu in Kelantan.
Sales of the budget carrier's 3,000 one-way tickets start today.
Tickets must be purchased by Sept 30, and travel on these once-daily flights must be completed between Nov 5 and March 26, 2005.
A one-way flight from Phuket to Singapore will cost 900 baht (about S$37.50), which means a return trip should cost less than $40, excluding airport tax.
Mr Tassapon Bijleveld, chief executive officer of Thai AirAsia, said in a press statement that the promotional fare is the airline's way of showing 'that we are ever committed to provide low, affordable fares to enable more people to fly'.
It is also the airline's latest salvo in a marketing war begun by Tiger Airways, which made its debut early this month, by selling $1 flights to Bangkok, Phuket and Hat Yai.
AirAsia replied by offering flights from Singapore to Bangkok at 49 cents, which sold out all 5,000 tickets last week.
Tiger Airways then tied up with online travel agent Zuji to offer a $49 package for a flight plus a night's hotel accommodation. In the face of such competition, full-cost carriers have had to drop their prices too. SilkAir priced its round-trip ticket to Phuket at $88, which is valid for travel until the end of next month.
Consumers may wonder how long the goodies will last. As Zuji's general manager, Ms Christina Siaw, noted: 'Promotions are the best way for any carrier to launch a new product.'
Once these special fares sell out, AirAsia's new Singapore-Phuket service, a one-way flight that departs daily at 12.45pm, will go for $49.99.
At a press conference for AirAsia's 49-cent Bangkok flight last week, its group chief executive Tony Fernandes said the Phuket flight 'probably can't get much lower than 49 cents'.
It just did.
