Hello ppruners !

I need your help
I'm a F/O on the 737 NG for a west african airline and i need to do my ATP very soon.
I have 4000 tt and more than 2000 h on the 737NG.
I also have a Comm IFR US and a foreign licence.
I have done my initial training on the 737 efis and the upgrade at flight safety london for the NG.
I need to find out where i can find a training center where i can get my ATP and the US type without having to pay the full type course.

It's hard to say because it might be impossible.

The checkride for a type rating in the US is essentially an ATP checkride--except it's for a specific aircraft.

Theoretically you can earn both the type and the ATP on the same checkride but I don't know who's going to sign you up for only a partial course.

Of course the best way would be to have your company pay for your training and submit the application for both 737 type and ATP certificate.

Either that, or I'm afraid you'll have to complete the entire course at your expense.

I'm afraid i will have to pay for the course because my company doesn't request the FAA licence.
I 've got another question, there must be a procedure through the FAA to get an approval based on a foreign licence and my experience to etablish an specific syllabus with a designed examiner or an FAA inspector, like in UK ...

Hi--

Yeah, I'm sure it's possible to "convert" your JAA type to an FAA type but I have no experience in this matter.

When I was a flight instructor I did have a Swiss student that converted his private pilot certificate. He simply presented his credentials to the FAA and they awarded him an FAA Private certificate with certain limitations.

My advice to you is this:

1) Do a search on Pprune for something like, "Convert JAA type to FAA type."

2) Start another thread with a more specific title to attract someone who has had the same experience.

3) Go to www.propilot.com In the menu, click on DOC's FAR Bulletin Board and post your question there. Doc is an authority on FAA regulations and probably has the resources to help you.

Once you hold a JAA ATP or a US Commercial (which you said you have) than you can just come over here and take the ATP Written and ATP checkride. Piece of cake. If you did this in a small twin engine piston at a place like ALL ATPS than you would save alot of money.
I'm not sure if the type ratings on your JAA ATP would transfer to the FAA certificate though. Have you tried contacting flight safety or simcom to see what they have to offer. I have heard of programs for FO's to get type ratings without buying a full course.

Not sure if they have this for the 737 though.

In the United States all 737 simulator centers will be contolled by FAR part 142 which tends to be the problem. FAR 142 makes it so the center must have approval from the FAA for each type of course that they intend to teach. Therefore the training centers only have approval for long courses or, in some cases, short courses. They will not specifically tailor a course for you as it would be cost prohibitive. Also, you must complete an approved course before you will be given a type ride.

You would probably qualify for a short course. The good news is that 737 courses are very affordable due to the high demand for this type rating. Typically you can do a full course for about $7000.00 plus accomodation, meals, etc. Although that might be on a 737-200 or 737-300. You may want to look into the 737-300/400 courses as the U.S. type rating doesn't differentiate between models. All it will ever say on your FAA certificate is B737 regardless of which simulator you take the type ride in. In the United States that type rating will be good for all models.

Some of the training centers you may want to look at include Higher Power Aviation, Aeroservices in Miami, Alteon ( formerly Flight Safety Boeing ), and K&S Aviation. There is a lot of information on 737 type ratings on the http://forums.flightinfo.com bulletin board.

Why not just call the FAA? Be very polite and I am sure they can help. If you just need the ATP why not go to one of the sausage factory schools and get it done in a few days?
