Gazman,

According to World Air Power Journal (from 1997) it used to go like this:

Aircraft wearing a two letter code 'A + x' are from 9 Sqn. Following on from this:

Bx = 14 Sqn

Cx = 17 Sqn

Dx = 31 Sqn

Ex = 15 Sqn (when front line, not TWCU/TOCU)

Fx = 16 Sqn (more anon on that one)

Gx = 20 Sqn

Hx = II(AC) - but used single letters instead, notably S, H, I, N, Y, T, W, O, A, C

Jx = 27 Sqn - J chosen to indicate 'Jumbo' (the sqn badge)

Kx = 13 Sqn

Lx = 45 Sqn (TWCU)

Mx = 617 - but replaced by the tribute to the Dams raid Lancasters, thus AJ-x

You'll note that in all cases, the first letter is the Sqn letter, with the second letter being that of the airframe.

12 Sqn adopted the 'Fx' format of codes (the 'F' being chosen for 'Fox') despite the fact that this repeated the allocation to 16 Sqn. However, as 16 had disbanded on Tornados by the time that 12 stood up on the type, this wasn't a problem. Obviously, the disbandement of XV, 16, 17, 20, 27 and 45 as Tornado units means that there are gaps in the sequencing.

When XV took over as the numberplate for the TWCU, it adopted codes beginning with the letter T.

Although that info is from 1997, I think it is still correct - but if not, at least it might serve as useful background?
