Amman is a pretty good place to be in. It is a safe city to be in and the locals are friendly and there are tons of good restaurants. Pretty expensive though. There is a 17% VAT over there which is a killer. Fuel is also expensive. It can get very cold in the winter so bundle up as some of the houses have no central heating. Even if they did, no one keeps it on all night because of the prices of fuel. Be careful driving as they are crazy over there.

Elevation 2000' and it can snow and get very cold. Bland architecture, no paint, all the buildings look the same with millions of satellite dishes on roofs. Annoying prayers piped over loudspeakers in minarets all over town, as early as 5 AM, although not as obressive as in Saudi Arabia. Moslem women aren't required to wear head scarfes, but are otherwise "off limits." Good restaurants and some cool pubs like "The Blue Fig."
