The fatal accident that occurred on the Fischer Fire near Levenworth, Washington resulted from a tail rotor strike according to credible witnesses. The final report will not be final for several months but barring other information that could point to other causes....will probably wind up with the tail rotor strike being the cause. The aircraft was consumed by fire after the crash thus finding a mechanical cause will be difficult.
The pilot, Mike Ward, was very highly regarded and considered an excellent, experienced pilot. All I talked to that knew him, expressed a sincere feeling of loss.
He will be missed by his fellow fire fighters.
