I know I posted this as a separate topic but I think it's actually too good to go to waste, so Mods please forgive me.

The advantage of this is that with an up to date Hosts banning file you get a LOT of protection essentially for free and at no cost to your system in terms of resources or extra programs.
The addition of eDexter speeds things up and gives you the assurance that things are working (you see "Blocked" where the ads should be.

"Supertrick XG is a fancy name for a couple of neat and simple dodges that have been around for a long time. Zero Grid had the near idea of packaging them together and rolling a Windows installer that sets 'em up nicely and painlessly for the less nerdy.

Part 1: is just an up to date anti-junk Hosts file that redirects your browser to a non-existent Web address (127.0.0.1) when it sees a known source of spam/adware. I've been using such a Hosts file for ages but this one is uptodate and the setup is neat. You can (and should) personalise your hosts file as well. This is combined with:

Part 2: eDexter is a tiny Webserver works only within your PC (no security worries). It fields the Hosts requests and returns a tiny GIF saying "Blocked!" (or anthing else you like). This speeds up the whole affair considerably.

For the nerdy, you can also use a PAC datafile which is much faster than searching through a large unindexed Hosts file. There are a a couple of other neat tricks too...

It's free and yes, there IS an uninstaller...

Ya, I'd be interested in your comments.

Another use for the HOSTS file is of course to speed up your system by eliminating DNS lookups from your ISP

Read this with interest yesterday and last night installed it on my PC.

Recently I have been suffering a slowdown on the net, looked like there was a virus but all ran clean and when I went back to the PC after a few hours the memory had dropped from 170 Mb free to about 88Mb, requiring a reboot.

After installing this software the pages (seem to) load faster and after leaving the PC for a while the memory was all still available so this has got my vote

There are a lot of other programs you have running. If you are not using them, I would install them. Go though your Add/Remove Programs and uninstall anything you are not using.

Personally I would uninstall:

I would also try stop from loading at bootup:

QuickTime
Atari
Epson
IncrediMail

And anything else you do not need.
