I have just bought a new Celeron processor for my computer. The instructions consist of a few pictograms showing how to fit the fansink unit - no mention of heatsink paste between the processor and fansink.

Can I fit the fansink to the processor 'dry' or should I obtain some heatsink paste to put between the processor and fansink? There is a square piece of black foil on the fansink where it would make contact with the processor. Perhaps this is all that is required?

I would appreciate some advice from any knowledgeable specialists on this subject.

Compass Call,
I think the square of black foil is known as a 'thermal pad'. This will indeed provide a better thermal bond between the CPU and heatsink.

I would certainly recommend the addition of some thermal heatsink paste to increase the bond. Maplin's sell it ;

Thermal Heatsink Paste (http://www.maplin.co.uk/search/menulevels.asp?CartID=040814000009952&Level=2&Criteria=&Menu=298&Exact=&Name=Heatsink )

I am sure others in the know will have some input too.

The black stuff is a standard single-use thermal transfer pad. Specialist heat sink grease would undoubtedly work better, but for a Celeron the pad is more than good enough.

Compass Call,

Many years ago a picked up a tube of Arctic Silver II (http://www.arcticsilver.com) for about $6.00. I still use the tube today since I still have plenty left. The current product is:

Arctic Silver 5 (http://www.arcticsilver.com/as5.htm)

They have a guide for removing and adding thermal grease again. It will give you a good understanding about the thermal grease.

Take Care,
