I'm as puzzled as the rest of you. I saw it circling anticlockwise centred on about Tooting (S London) I would guess, between around 20:15 and 21:25 BST, apparently climbing steadily as it circled (although the circling/turns were slightly irregular) and I think it was display no nav lights at all. It disappeared from view before it got too dark to see, heading approx SE.

Would this have interfered with Heathrow takeoffs (they have been on Easterlies this evening)?

I doubt you'll get a sensible answer for obvious reasons... 'Nuff said?

It may have been doing aerial photographic surveys. Those 3d things with cameras shooting in synchrony from each wingtip. When you look at the results through stereoscopic lenses St Paul's will seem to be poking you in the eye.

Was it one of those Police Aviation Services (PAS) Islanders with lots of cameras and gadgets onboard? I doubt you'll get a sensible reply if it was.

It's that pesky Ryanair (http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=110826&highlight=ryanair+heathrow) again, isn't it.
