Laptop screen with a desktop

Hi,

I have an extra laptop screen (don't ask!) and I was wonderingif there is a way to connect it to the graphics card of a desktop PC?

I can see the pic connector that used to go in the laptop on that screen. Is there an adptor for it or?

You could take a VGA Cable and try to pin out the LCD. The only problem is getting the pin out for that screen. I doubt it will be published anywhere.

You might be lucky, depending on the manufacturer. I know that Compaq used to publish the most extraordinarily detailed information about their products, and I wouldn't be surprised if others did or do also.

I can't see why it would be a proprietary interface that the manfr. would be unwilling to publish.

Thanks for the input. Yes its a Compaq, and I might have that info somwhere. As for Maplin its 5000 Km away from here and yes they're great ;)

I guess by biggest concern was, would it run on my desktop video card?

As long as your Vid Card Drivers are set to put out the video in a range of 60Hz to 75Hz it will be compatible with that LCD Screen. ;)

Laptops use a lot of customer hardware, this is likley to be harder than it looks. I am sure have read of people trying this, i'll dig out some links (I had similar thoughts a while back.) ...

The main problem, apart from custom hardware, is that most video cards out put an anlaogue signal, Laptop LCD's take a digital signal, so you need to convert from one to the other and that is often as expensive as a cheap LCD monitor. :hmm:

Most Vid Cards today come with DVI VGA Connectors. He just has to pin out the VGA Cable to fit that connector.

If you only have a VGA Cable you can put it into a DVI with an Adapter.

Good point Richard :D But rather your graphics card than mine without a manufacturers pin out for the monitor! :eek:
