Looks like they are finally getting on with a project (50 years old and counting) to build a replacement international airport on the Pacific Slope to Guatemala City's "La Aurora." Sounds very similar to El Salvador's situation, where they build many years ago an airport near Comalapa to replace the Ilopango airport. The airport will be built in the Department of Esquintla-- the problem is that Esquintla is about 1½ hours from Guatemala City (unlike La Aurora which is pretty much surrounded by the city). So, worse trip to the airport, but at least no jets rolling off the end of the runway, down the ravine into squatters' houses.

Are they planning on closing the old one, or starting another airport controversy like some other places? Maybe wait until it finally happens.
