Evening Gents!

Does any checkride with the FAA automatically renew your CFI-ticket or do you have to take a refresher every two years?

I know about the signing off so many students, and having this and that pass-rate, but not working as instructor it doesn't apply to this case.

Just want to keep my CFI current.

Could I renew by adding an FAA ATP single-engine for example?

14 CFR 61.197 CFI renewals (http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/14mar20010800/edocket.access.gpo.gov/cfr_2002/janqtr/14cfr61.197.htm)

Doing an additional CFI rating would renew it. Just doing an ATP will not renew the CFI.

If the checkride is with an FAA inspector, as opposed to a designated examiner, the inspector has the discretion to renew your CFI for you. Most will be happy to do it for you, but I suggest you have the CFI renewal paperwork filled out and ready to present when you ask.

It is indeed at the discretion of the inspector but most of them would want to see some instruction being done not just a type ride.

I know of a CFI re-instatment being done on a Falcon 900 while the applicant was giving a new F/O his required landings after initial simulator qualification.

But, take the paperwork, all completed, with you and ask the guy nicely. It cannot hurt. As already stated it is up the the inspectors discretion.
