QF Callsigns.....

G'day!

while flying, i just been listenin out on Melbourne Centre & Brisbane Centre and i've been hearing callsigns such as "Qantas five eighty" etc etc. I thought the domestic sectors always used their rego as their callsigns and flight number for international sectors? Does anyone know why this has changed?

If you do a search on Flight Number Callsigns you will see quite a number of threads on the subject including the pro's and con's.

Mostly con's from a communication aspect in my view. Apparently very good from an admin/ops despatch aspect. (Only minor changes required to FPL for U/S or late equipment changes).

Certainly entertaining during busy traffic scenarios when VOZ and QFA have the same or similar callsigns and answer each others calls or completely forget who they are. Or for the controller planning the sight to follow when the wake turb turns out to be H instead of M - oops!

I admit to stuffing it up as well, a lot more than when rego's were used.

Always enetertaining to have JST757 (a 717) with VOZ767 (a 737) and QFA747 (a 767) all on the same freq! Those 'management' types must get a real hard on at the 'progress' they have created.

The only problem with commonsense - it not that common

Had a phone call one day in Skippy dispatch. A seriously mid-European accented voice said "I am taking the triple 7 from MEL to PER, where is my flight plan ?"

Deathly hush follows whilst Heat thinks "we don't flight plan MEL/PER triple 7's here."

To cut a very long, confusing and slightly hilarious story short, Skippy driver is taking flight 777 (a B737) to PER. Now I know why you should say ROGER when you havn't the slightest idea what to say next.
