Folks,

I cut and paste a letter from today's Daily Telegraph. It's self-explanatory.

This is a long-shot, but I assume there are old pilot's organisations, charities etc who maybe able to help. Can any you of you assist the writer? I'm happy to forward any helpful replies to the Telegraph.

'Sir - I read the article regarding the German pilot who apologised for bombing a village church (News, July 13). I would like to trace another German pilot.

In 1940, my father was stationed in Bradbury Line Barracks, Hereford, before he went out to the Middle East.

One day, a German plane appeared overhead. The workers at the aluminium factory were changing shifts. Had the pilot dropped his bomb, there would have been a massacre. He did not. He circled round (I found this very exciting aged 10) and finally dropped the bomb.

Only one person was killed. On his way back to Germany, the pilot was shot down. In hospital, he said: "I gave them time to get away." I can vouch for the truth of that. I should be grateful for any help to find the pilot and thank him.

Peta Orr, East Grinstead, W Sussex'

As I say, this is a long-shot, but I thought it was worth a try.

Cheers,
Chris.
