been asked to design a small web site...


apart from Notepad writing the HTML or buying DreamWeaver, what's the best in between the two ..


cheap and cheerful is the watchword ....

I started with Notepad - ok - I know it shows:D - but it is fine for 'getting going' if you know basic HTML, and there are plenty of sites you can 'inspect' to see how it is done, plus loads of free javascript sites.

I still use Notepad myself. There are two sites full of info and scripts to help you out:

Hot Scripts (http://www.hotscripts.com/)

and

Flash Kit (http://www.flashkit.com/index.shtml)

Both sites are great for beginners to veterans.

Bre901 - a timely link, thank you. Another excellent editor which allows YOU to create the HTML is 'EditPlus' - it is Shareware, well worth 'buying' and at This site (http://www.editplus.com/). It allows you to 'view' the code you write in a browser of your choice as you write the code.

PS You will get some disappointments as you do this:D

I have built 3 websites using Moonfruit (http://www.moonfruit.com) and have found they are very easy to build and manage. I bought the domain names from Simply (http://www.simply.com) and then set up forwarding etc. Again, easy to use and cost effective. Hope this helps....:ok:

Or get the student version of Dreamweaver, if you qualify (as long as it isn't for commercial use) - it's worth it in the long term.

EVRSoft's 1stPage 2000 is still free and has to be the best bargain around http://www.evrsoft.com/

I don't write a stack of HTML, but the thought of using NotePad induces instant migraine.

There are literally hundred of better freeware/shareware editors around that will allow you macros, syntax highlighting and all the other little bits that make it easier.

If you have MS Word, you can use it as well, but I would look elsewhere.

If you have the MS office suite you could try front page? It is very good for beginners and has lots of templates on there too.

Couldnt agree more, it is a true pile of (insert obscene word here) and I much prefer dreamweaver MX - but for beginners, it's a start I suppose.
