Just reading this (http://www.casa.gov.au/avreg/fcl_lic/photo/index.htm) about the new licences with photos.

No mention of pilots having to pay a cent.

Or is that no money for the licence, but the security check will still cost you $200?

From the website :
If you already hold an Australian Flight Crew Licence, you will be advised when to apply for an photo licence. CASA will not charge you to convert your current licence to a new photo licence.

You are right though... it doesn't mention anything about the cost of the security check; HOWEVER.. they accept an ASIC as a "Class-A" ID... therefore should that also cover the security side of it ?

Probably just bureauacray. It wasn't CASA who decided to charge $200, it was DOTARS. So don't be surprised to see a $200 bill turning up at the same time. CASA can always come up with some excuse not to be allowed to issue the license until security checks have been done by relevant authorities.

Given the nature of this government, don't hold your breath hoping for a happy outcome.
