Wireless mouse, annoying low battery warning

I have recently taken delivery of a new home PC (HP Pavilion T461) on a tax free lease deal from my employer so I had little choice but got a great price. The PC comes with a wireless mouse and keyboard that each take 2 AA batteries. When the mouse batteries are starting to run low I get an annoying pop up window appear telling me to replace the batteries, but every time I try to move the cursor over the window to click the "no go away I will change the batteries later button" the mouse comes back to life and the window disappears. A few seconds later the whole process starts off all over again so I give up and change the still perfectly good batteries in the mouse.

I am now comming close to selling the wireless mouse and keyboard to some other mug on eBay and buying replacements with cables attached, unless somebody can come up with a way to disable these annoying warnings.

You didn't say what make/model of keyboard/mouse you've got.

And did you try re-installing the driver and program for them?

Have you dug around in the mouse setting in control panel? There may be a selection to switch off warnings. Or there may be a mouse symbol at bottom right on the normal screen - double left or right click may bring up a menu where you can switch off the warning.

Don't do it, once you know the joys of wireless, going back to cable will drive you crazy.

Sometimes my wireless mouse and keyboard play up and if it is not the batteries it is that the placement of the cordless box of tricks has been moved. I am not a computer person at all but can only assume that the movement of this interrupts the signal or something!

A few seconds later the whole process starts off all over again so I give up and change the still perfectly good batteries in the mouse.I think that if they're starting to run low and triggering the message, they're no longer "perfectly good batteries". Yes, they may still have enough in them to run the mouse but they are on their way out. If you leave them till they get lower, the mouse could then start to become unreliable, jerky, slow to respond - all before it finally dies.

Batteries are cheap. Personally, I'd just change them.

I've got half a dozen workstations at work fitted with wireless mouse/keyboard [Logitech] + WinXP or W2K. We don't get any warnings [I'll fish around in the settings to see if I can find out why]. When the pointer stops moving or the light in the mouse goes out we change the batteries. Simple.

Thanks for the advice so far, my keyboard and mouse are the standard HP offering that came with the computer. I don't have the driver to hand as it was pre installed at the factory. Operating system is Windows XP Home.

I am not a skinflint wishing to get the maximum use out of the batteries. All I want to do is cancel the warning, carry on using my computer and then buy some new batteries tomorrow lunchtime.

The HP Keyboard and Mouse might be an OEM Co-Branded Logitech. You should check to see and update the drivers.

Another option is to uninstall the Mouse and Keyboard Drivers, the keyboard and mouse will still work, but you will not get any annoying Low Battery warning.
