View Full Version : Persistent pop-ups

Hi,

I have just installed a new PC for the kids and am having trouble with pop-ups. The PC runs XP Home and I have installed ZoneAlaem Pro (which I have had on my PC - running W98SE - for some time). The internet connection is through a cable modem connected to a router, into which the PC is plugged.

ZoneAlarm is set to block all pop-ups (in fact the settings on the new PC are exactly the same as on my existing PC) but two ads keep popping up on the new PC - I have no problems on the existing PC. As far as I can see, these ads cannot be getting through the firewall as they are always the same ones and they do not appear on the existing PC only the new one. There must be something on the HD itself.

I have also installed and run Ad-Aware but that has not stopped them (it regularly detects a lot of rubbish though!). I have also tried deleting cookies and temp files but to no avail.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Get Pop-up Stopper.

Problem solved.

Cheers!

Hi aiglon,

Yep, whatever is causing the popups is on the machine already, so the firewall will not stop them (unless they are also trying to phone home).

Please download 'Hijack This!' from here (http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/), unzip, and place it in it’s own folder, (not in the temp folder, or on the desktop) doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan". When the scan is finished, click "Save Log", and copy and paste it in a reply.

This will give us a rundown of what’s going on in your PC. One of us here will be glad to analyse it for you. Don’t fix anything yourself yet, as a lot of the stuff on that list will be harmless or required.

Don't forget to disable smileys before posting.. :)

Cheers

Liam

Hi aiglon,

Please run a new HJT! Scan, and check to fix the following entries, being sure to double check that you haven't missed any. Next, close all browser windows and click the Fix checked button…

Next, please double click on the My Computer icon on the desktop. Go to Tools | Folder Options, click on the View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is checked. Also uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Now click Apply to all folders, then click Apply then OK.

Then boot into safe mode, (see here (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406) for info if needed) and delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\Temp folder, but not the folder itself. Next please find and delete the following bolded files...

C:\WINDOWS\System32\SWin32.dll

C:\WINDOWS\System32\automove.exe

..and these folders...

C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch

C:\Program Files\Common files\updater

C:\PROGRA~1\anti show tick

Then please boot back into normal mode and download AdAware 6 181 from here (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/).

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by clicking [u]Check for updates now, and following the prompts.

Now to set it up for optimum performance...

Make sure the following settings are configured. Remember that ON=GREEN.

From main window click Start | Activate in-depth scan.

Then click Use custom scanning options | Customize and have these options switched ON...

Scan within archives
Scan active processes
Scan registryDeep scan registry
Scan my IE Favourites for banned URLs
Scan my host-files

Then click the Settings button.. (the gear icon on the top row) then Tweak | Scanning engine and check..

Unload recognised processes during scanning.
Cleaning engine.
Let windows remove files in use at next reboot.

and uncheck..

Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion.

Then click Proceed, to save your settings.

Now click the Scan button.

When scan is finished, check the little box to the left of each entry to select them for removal, and get rid of them.

Next, reboot again and download Spybot - Search & Destroy, from here (http://security.kolla.de): if you haven't already got the program.

Click on Settings, and Settings again. Go to the Webupdate section, and check Display also available beta versions.

Now press Online, and search for, and put a check mark next to all updates, and install following the prompts.

Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, and click Check for Problems. Once the scan is complete, have SpyBot remove all it finds marked in RED.

Next, please reboot and post a new log for a final once over.

E-Liam,

Quick question - in the Temp folder there are three sub-folders (Cookies, Temporary internet files and History), do I delete just their contents or the sub-folders as well?

Thanks

Hi,

Yes, delete everything except the C:\Windows\Temp folder itself.

Cheers

E-Liam,

OK, all done. The only problems were that I could not find the file SWin32.dll or the folder C:\program files\common files\updater

737TG,

I do not like Popup Stoppers since they only mask a problem a computer is having.

If you do not have a firewall then you want to stop the Messenger Service:

Start >> Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Services

Then Find Messenger and change Startup Type from Automatic to Manual.

Take Care,

Richard

P.S. aiglon, it looks like your kids have been busy. ;)

P.S. aiglon, it looks like your kids have been busy

That's one of the reasons I got them their own PC, so they wouldn't keep infesting mine with those damn adware thingies :}

Hi Aiglon,

HJT generally deregisters BHO dll files, but I just like to check that they have gone.. I know this particular one is installed along with Automove, but it's always best to check. As for updater, could you just do the following just to make sure it's gone anyway. Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs and look in the list for..

Keen Value

and/or

E-Universe

and delete if found. Just one more entry to fix..

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search -
http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html?p=ZNxdm462

And that's that one done. :ok:

Give me a few minutes, and I'll check out the other log.

Cheers

Liam

Can't do a new reply, this post's not old enough.. :D

Hi Aiglon,

Log #2,

Please run a new HJT! Scan, and check to fix the following entries, being sure to double check that you haven\'t missed any. Next, close all browser windows and click the Fix checked button…

Just houseclearing here, nothing wrong at all. Then if you run Adaware and Spybot as per the last set of instructions, then you\'re good to go.. :ok:

Cheers

You're welcome Aiglon, :)

Cheers Evo.. :ok:

No problem. I know that being a resident expert at a few security sites, I can just as easily take a patient to one of them, but between Whiz and Aiglon you have 3 checked out machines and they didn't need to go off site. :)

That'll boost the ratings, and keep everyone here. Keeps the sponsors happy, and that keeps Prune towers happy.. :D

It may look pretty complex at first, but I've been doing this for a long time now, and all my C&P instructions are based at newbie level, so it's unlikely that anyone will get confused by them. I just have to make sure that the stuff I write that's machine specific is done likewise. :)

HJT's a goer then? :8

Cheers

Aiglon,

Just do not let them infect the entire network. ;)

Take Care,

Richard

P.S. It is sure good to have Liam around to sort out all the pests! :ok:

Just do not let them infect the entire network

At the moment, my set up is just two separate PCs connected to the internet through a router; I haven't set things up as a network yet. And maybe I won't 'til the kids learn some net-sense :(

Trouble is, they will insist on visiting these gaming sites and I am sure most of this crap comes from there

As you say, having people like Liam around is a great help :ok:

All the best

Aiglon,

If you have both comps connected to the same router, then you already have a network.

Take Care,

Richard
