For like minded PC users, one of the things that has always peeved me about shutting down or re-booting my windows driven PC’s is having to first go to the start button and then choosing again from the subsequent message box the shutdown, restart or logoff option.

On my old windows98 PC I had a shortcut for shutdown and restart on my desktop, but since my upgrade to an XP computer I no longer had the desktop shortcuts and could not find how to install them … until now that is!

Here’s how: For a quick RESTART desktop shortcut;

1. Right click on your desktop, select New/Shortcut
2. In the box that opens, type the following in the location window; shutdown –r –t 00 and then hit the ‘next’ button. (note where the spaces are)
3. Name the shortcut, eg, ‘Restart’ and then click finish.

Now to restart your PC, just double click the new shortcut on your desktop.

For a SHUTDOWN shortcut, do same as above except type shutdown –s –t 00 in the location window.

For LOGOFF shortcut, type shutdown –l –t 00

It may not be a whole lot quicker than the standard shutdown method, but somehow, I find it a lot more convenient.
