Qatar Airways to start direct flights

QATAR Airways is to start direct flights between Melbourne and Doha three times a week from later this year.
Chief executive Akbar Al Baker said the flights would start in the December quarter, but the airline planned a gradual expansion to daily services and a second Australian destination, most likely Sydney.
Mr Al Baker said the airline would be keen to develop a code-share relationship with national carrier Qantas.
"(We are encouraging) more and more people ... in our network to come to Australia for tourism and to know Australia is a very friendly country towards the Arab community."
Qatar Airways would use Airbus A330-200s on the Australian route initially, upgrading to Airbus A340-600s by 2006.
The airline operates flights between 49 destinations in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
