Yesterday was the first day of business for Washington - Dulles based Independence Air. The first flights went to and from Boston, Chicago, Newark, Atlanta, and Raleigh-Durham. Over the next several weeks, Independence Air will increase service to 35 cities system wide. Some of the cities will have as many as 16 flights a day. Currently, Independence Air has a fleet of 87 Ijets, also known as CRJ200s. The first of 27 Airbus 319s arrive in November with Satellite tv in every bright blue leather Spectrum seatback. The Spectrum seats were chosen by the employees after a rigorous competition between every major aircraft seat supplier. When it came to choosing the right seat, cost was not as important as comfort and the Spectrum seats were the clear favorite by almost every employee at the company. Independence Air has options for at least an additional 50 Airbus 319s. Ticket prices start as low as $39 plus taxes/fees and can only be purchased through the website http://www.flyi.com or by calling 1-800-FLY-FLYI. In the first weekend of service many flights are sold-out. Independence Air does not overbook any of its flights.

Cheers to FLY-I,

Good luck to them. Their in-flight announcements lead me to think that bean counters are not always in charge... http://www.flyi.com/announcements/

I think marketing is in charge, right now. They are trying very hard to establish a brand. With a first year marketing budget of $30 million, Independence Air will get some attention. They signed a deal with Matsu****a for in flight entertainment on the A319s. I hope they go with the free high speed internet access at every seat option.

cheers,
