Can anyone recommend a decent aircraft recognition book for airliners, or a website. I have done a search on here but came up with nothing.

Try 'Jane's Aircraft Recognition Guide'. Widely available. Bit bulky, so not exactly a pocket guide, and also a little small to be comprehensive, but it does cram in a lot of GA and military types too along with those funny egg-beater sort of creations.

Personally, I have found this Swedish book very useful although it is around five years old now: http://www.flygvapenmuseum.se/forsaljning/boktips.htm#flygplanskort

Contains most aircraft currently flying - both military and civil. So if the language is not a problem...

Not much a/c recognition needed these days. It's all bloody Boeing and Airbus

Good way to brush up is Airliners.net

There's a random photo selector at the bottom. Quite good for testing yourself.

trying to identify aircraft from directly below (like from my back garden) is bloody hard work

a deckchair and nice cold beer makes it much more pleasant...
