FAA type ratings

Hello fellow North American aviators,

having heard about some flight training institutions offering " Abreviated FAA type rating " and wish to know the definition and the meaning of the terms Abreviated.

who qualifies for such a scheme and what are any additional benefits apart from cost.

I'm not sure, but I think the term applies to pilots who have extensive experience as a first officer on a particular type. Due to the familiarity and currency, the FAA allows a shorter course of training.
