G'Day

Can any of you tell me, if you or anyone you know of managed to get accepted into QF in recent years, with the min 500 command hours, but being in their mid to late 30's and only working P/T as a pilot when accepted.
Probably being unrealistic, but hey, worth asking?

Why don't you apply and find out?

Ease up TEB, it's only a question...I'm sure he has applied and is looking for a bit of hope is all. :ouch:

Hey TurbineDreamer - it is not out of the question!

As the "One who thieves enemas" (why anyone would do that I'm not sure) says - the only way to find out is to give it a go.

I got in with not many more hours and not many fewer years on the clock. My understanding is that as long as you meet the minimum criteria, then you will be considered.

Hope that helps.

Turbine Dreamer,

I'm 38 with 1,250 hrs, of which 1,039 command, of which 260 multi, with time building now on a Chieftain, most other multi done in an Aztec, and most single time on a C182RG.

Have passed the skills and psych testing before when I applied for a cadetship. Have since done my study for VCE level maths and physics. Currently doing some charter work, some flying for my own business, and spent most weekends for two years dropping meatbombs all the while with two young kids.

Made as many Qantas contacts as I could while not living in Syney, grilled as many of their pilots as I could on what to do, what to know, and what to say.

I keep sending updates to Qantas, and they keep sending back rejection letters. Something about others 'deemed more competitive'.

What does one do?

Not sure of the exact formula that QF uses to decide if your resume is 'competitive' but its a case of the old airline recruiting standard...'age comensurate with experience'.

Qantas can't say this because Australia has age discrimination laws and if they did admit this they would be wide open for a breach of discrimination law. You may know a 23yo with 500hours who has got in but you wont find a 38yo with 500 hours with the same fortune.

For turbine dreamer and deckchair, i would say that at your age and with your experience your application would not quite fit the age v experience criteria, but don't stop trying, Qf have employed a 52yo direct entry SO, his experience was however substantial.

Hope that sheds some light.

You will find that using experience commensurate with age isn’t a breach of the anti discrimination act or any age discrimination laws. If they were simply using age then it would be a different story. Subtle difference I know but that is how the law works and employers will use it if and when they can.
