System Administrator job available

DSC is the company behind PPRuNe's server - we take care of the hardware, the operating system and the network on which it operates. We have a vacancy for a System Administrator. The role is quite broad - you'll need to know (or learn) about Linux, Solaris, various RDBMS (including Oracle and MySQL), networking hardware, network security, GSM telecoms and more. The position is very flexible and we encourage home working, so you need to be self-disciplined and dedicated. You will have round-the-clock responsibility for a number of servers of different types, so there is a real incentive to perform good preventative maintenance.

Keep an open full-fare ticket from Orlando to LHR .. JIC. That plus a remote-control boot to kick the cabinet and a means to recycle the power ought to suffice.

Back in the mid-70s Unix wasn't yet very stable. I was a user desperately trying to get a project done. When the PDP-11/45 would crash in the evening I'd phone the guru, restart the computer, and he'd put the system back together from home.

I remember programming in Assembler on the old PDP-11. I am glad those days are gone forever. ;)

Actually we have an automated system for power-cycling. And we have people in the data centre who will place a precise kick wherever it may be required. But alas, the role does require going to the data centre sometimes, to install new equipment and suchlike.

This job might suit someone who has set up a few Linux systems at home and is looking forward to doing so in a professional environment. We don't necessarily require commercial experience. Demonstrable knowledge and a lot of enthusiasm are the things we can't live without.
