Hi all;
This question showed up in command interview

A340 flying at ceiling FL410, TCAS RA climb occured, what is your action?

As per TCAS system, the system should know the aircarft performance - able to give 1500 fpm climb.

But will you exceed the ceiling ? and follow RA command ?

Help guys.
Thanks

I'd guess that you climb. FL410 may well be the certified limit, but surely not the absolute limit for the aircraft.

Well the alternative could be an aluminium shower, so chose which you'd prefer:
1- exceed altitude margin by 1-2% for a minute or so
2- end up a jam sandwich on the grass.

I know which I'd prefer!

Been there over GVA in Bae 146 at FL310 (certified ceiling) recieved RA due empty A320 climbing below . Believe me when it happens in real life the decision is simple as per N,S,F 's post . CLimb a little or crash ! not a difficult call .

You can easily climb 500-1000 feet beyond your certified ceiling. In most cases the certified ceiling is predicated on the ability to comply with oxygen criteria for rapid descent during pressurization failure, not specifically for airplane performance.

I take my hat off to a man who managed to get the 146 above FL310. Most struggle to get it up to that height! :D

Seriously tho was this a while back as I was under the impression that no 146's have been certified for RVSM?
We get an exemption to perform airtests.

Cheers

Just switch it to TA only when operating near your ceiling!
