USB1 vs USB2

Evening all,
I wonder if anyone could tell me how to find out if I have usb2 or usb1 drivers? I have just built a new system using a Microstar MB and winXP however when I check the drivers the system tells me that I have
Universal Series Bus Controllers
Intel(R) 82801EB Universal Host Controller
Intel(R) 82801EB Universal Host Controller
Intel(R) 82801EB Universal Host Controller
Intel(R) 82801EB Universal Host Controller
Generic USB Hub
for the usb ports. My laptop however actually says USB2 Controllers (I cant remember exactly& its not here). If they are not USB2 drivers how do I iacquire & install the Usb 2 drivers.

1. if you haven't got XP SP1 or 1a installed, then do so, see here, (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp) and the update here. (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822603) SP1 adds support of USB 2.0 to XP.

Also recheck the driver CD that came with your motherboard, if it supports USB 2.0 it will have the drivers on it, and should have an installer routine.

If you give us the name of the motherboard, we can tell you if the ports are USB 1.1 or USB 2.0.

P.S. If you go in the Motherboard's BIOS it will also tell you if the ports are 1.1 or 2.0. ;)

Urrr... If I understand your question correctly the thingg is that USB1 and USB2 are different hardware (which need different drivers).

You can't go from USB1 to USB2 just by changing the driver.

Hi Folks Thanks for your responses.
I am using Win XP release 5.1 with SP1. and a MSI875PNeo motherboard. As i read the docs the Bios USB settings read as foll:
"Set to All Device if you need to use any USB1.1/2.0 device in the operating system that does not support or have any USB1.1/2.2 driver installed, such as DOS and SCO Unix. Set to no mice only if you want to use any USB device other than a usb mouse. Options: Disabled, No Mice, All Device"
The installation disk referred me back to Win XP SP1 which was included in my original XP installation disk.
The MB specs tell me it has 8 USB2 ports.

The BIOS setting you mention sounds like it's for "USB Legacy Support" to allow USB hardware to work under DOS.

If you're running 2000/XP you should be able to leave this option disabled.

SP1a doesn't come with the necessary INF files to recognize the i875P chipset, so you need to apply the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility, even if you´ve installed SP1a. The bad news is that it should be done, apparently, before installing any other drivers. :ouch:

Ah an MSI Board. I just happen to be a Senior Moderator for the MSI Forums at the TW HQ. There is a very good forum to read though:

Thanks all for your help & especially Richard - I have been to the forum & posted so we will see Unfortunately it all ended in tears! I tried to install the drivers from the installation disk & wound up reflashing the BIOS & now its dead - The old adage if its not broke don't mess with it comes to mind. So its down to the trusty local computer shop for help - apparently the boot files have been erased :}

If your motherboard is dead after a BIOS Flash, remove the battery from the mobo and the power cord from the power supply and leave them out a good 15 minutes before putting them back in. (That will reset the CMOS for you.)
