I am studying for my ATPL phase one exams and finding one or two of the subjects a bit of a challenge. I live in the Westcountry and would like to know if there are any schools (or tutors) that can offer, one-on-one tuition to get me up to speed in the problem areas of my study? It would be for 2-4 hrs each week for the month leading up to my exams, problem areas are Nav (suprise), Met and a bit of Instruments.

Thanks for your time!

I have a mate who has struggled off and on for the past 18 months or so self studying. He should write a book on how not to do it I think.

Tried with the notes from Bristol, then took himself off to see someone at Cranfield, then got some more notes or books from somewhere. And the entire time he didn't bother following the lesson plan for any particular one. In the end he settled at GTS in Bournemouth and pretty much had 1 to 1 tuition off and on in 1-2 week spurts over about a 6 month period and then fitted into their consolidation courses when they came around. Think he only has 2 exams to pass now and a few sittings left so fingers crossed and good on him for sticking with it.

Hi Guy's

I am sure if you contact the groundschool's they will tell you if their instructors do private tuition, i believe quite alot of the instructors are self employed and only "come in" to teach their specialist subject/s when required.

For Nav try Howard Fincher, ex PPSC at

[email protected]

he is excellent

Good Luck

It's unusual not to find some areas of distance learning difficult. Make sure you are making full use of your distance learning school, you have paid for their support, call them. Several schools have internet forums for their students. If yours doesn't have one we (bristol) and Oxford have forums that are open to anyone. Most problems can be sorted out over the phone or on the forum.

Half the problem, usually, is uncertainty and underconfidence. If you can't do the progress tests get the school to help you, if you are passing the progress tests the chances are you'll be OK in the exam.

onehunga, I have to say your friend's story leaves me speechless. How is he going to cope on a type rating course?

Alex it takes the biscuit when he tries to advise me on study techniques! You got to laugh though.

I think he is hoping that his ex pat uncle who is a training capt with a major in Asia will take him under his wing and get him through! Maybe a year of reading the manuals and free access to the sim will get him through:)

You make me laugh you fat kiwi, you've had those BG notes for 1 year and you've just got thro General Nav. ONE subject distance learning in ONE YEAR your be 58 when you get there you greaser. Alex has a wife and hes not gay so stop greasing him up so he'll let you on the course early.
As for your friend he sounds like he just wanted the best training that fitted into his hectic life style and at GTS i'm sure he found it. Remember follow the course CORRECTLY and stop asking for my answers! and BOY KEEP ON THAT ATKINS!
