1.
A co-located VOR/DME is at 66 42'N 043 15'W where magnetic variation is 45W and the transmitter aerial is 500ft amsl. A aircraft flying at FL330 is on the 225 radial and has a DME range of 10nm. its position is:

A. 66 50'N 043 15'W
B. 66 42'N 043 25'W
C. 66 34'N 043 15'W
D. 66 42'N 043 05W

2.

An aircraft is at position 80 N 060W heading 330 (T), groundspeed 500kts; determine the position of the aircraft after 3 hours flying. ( assume a great circle track on a polar stereo chart)

A. 73 00'N 166 30'E
B 72 00N 166 30'W
C. 73 00N 133 30'E
D. 63 00'N 166 30'E

3.

At 1100 UTC an aircraft is estimating arrival at waypoint B at 1400 UTC. The aircraft is at FL310, OAT -50, Mach No 0.82 and wind component -50. it is required to delay the arrival by 10 minutes by reducing speed to Mach. No. 0.75. What is teh latest time for the aircraft to slow down

A. 1212
B. 1225
C. 1250
D. 1300

I am struggling with the 'how to' for the relative velocity questions so explanations and most importantly 'how to' would be greatly appreciated for that question.

Im not sure what im missing with Q.1... the 225 radial bit is confusing me, and the same with Q2 with the 330 (T) part.

Many thanks in advance

Q1

This doesn't require any calculations. You are on the 225 radial from the VOR so it is magnetic. Variation west magnetic best, so you are on the 180 True radial, i.e. south of the VOR. This tells you that you are on the same meridian of longitude, 043 15W.

You are at 10d from the VOR so you have to be at a lower latitude than the VOR.

Only answer C fits.

Q2

I have seen this before but can't remember it right now, I will have a think unless someone beats me to it.

Q3

This is a whiz wheel question. You need to find the groundspeeds from the information given. From your initial groundspeed you can calculate your distance from waypoint B.
Once you have worked out the difference between the 2 mach speeds given it should be a simple distance, speed and time calculation.
