1940 - Igor Sikorsky patented his first helicopter.

And also .......

1939 - Regular transatlantic air services began as a Pan American Airways 'Yankee Clipper] took off from Port Washington, New York, bound for Europe.

1932 - Amelia Earhart took off from Newfoundland for Ireland to become first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic.

1927 - Charles Lindbergh began his solo flight across the Atlantic

And may I recommend Lindbergh's book "The Spirit of St. Louis" about his famous flight. Even rotary wing drivers will probably find it interesting.

I'd also recommend the Movie with Jimmy Stuart, grew up watching that on Friday nights. :ok: One of the best movies ever made in my opinion....not that my opinion has ever counted for much...

The German patent for the intermeshing helicopter was issued in 1902.

Heck, the Germans were flying various helicopters before 1940
