Not sure if Heliport will allow this but here goes. Since we have had a cool mix of images on the rotorheads at work thread I thought it would be a great idea to run a PPrune Photo Competition. This is what I am going to offer as a prize.

FIRST PRIZE
1. A Two year complimentary subscription to Heli Ops.

2. A copy of the video The Last Great Adventure showing the history of live deer capture in NZ by helicopter. An awesome video with plenty of "holy ****e" action in it.

3. A copy of the award winning book called the Chopper Boys, a pictorial history of animal capture in New Zealand. Combines two books called the Chopper Boys and the Helicopter Hunters.

4. Inclusion of the winning image in the 2005 Helicopters at Work calendar, plus 20 copies to give to your mates.

2ND PRIZE
1. Copy of The Last Great Adventure Video.

2. One year comp subscription to Heli Ops.

3RD PRIZE
1. One year complimentary sub to Heli Ops.

HELIPORT'S PRIZE
The image that Heliport likes the most will win a special moderators prize of a copy of the above mentioned The Chopper Boys book.

The only conditions are the images must be modern day, sorry but no oldies. And each images must show the beauty of the helicopter, either static or working.

All images must be posted to this thread and yours truly will pick the winning entry, in conjunction with Heliport.

So post away guys. Images that have been posted on the rotorheads thread are eligible but only six images will be accepted as entries by each member of Pprune so make sure you post your best ones.

Deadline for Entries 18th of August so that gives you plenty of time.

Thank You for the opportunity Autorotate. :ok:

I am sure not many of us can even try and match your pics - but let's try with some more "exclusive" one's ;)

My first one is of a Mi-24 just after she discarded her load of 80 x 80 mm rockets. On a shooting range of course...

http://www.nel.co.za/Data/photo272.jpg

Here we have an unusual "fly past" as it was a low speed fly past with a high nose up. Yes it might look normal but normally we fly with 8 degrees nose down at 140 to 160 kts.

http://www.nel.co.za/Data/photo275.jpg

Here we are in the hover with wheels up. This was the last official picture of this helicopter. I wrote her off a week later in a double engine failure.

http://www.nel.co.za/Data/photo276.jpg

Here we approach from the Atlantic in to land.

http://www.nel.co.za/Data/photo277.jpg

Hope you enjoyed them.

More later ... :ok:

Autorotate,

Thanks for giving up such great prizes for this photo competition, but i am a little confused as to the marking criteria on the competition, is is down to the technicality of the photo, or is it just a good looking photo you are after, or does it have to reflect one of the great principle areas of photography i.e movment, colour, shade, texture etc? Do they have to be pictures we have taken ourselves, or just any old photo, scrounged from anywhere?

Please advise as i have a few i would like to post, but not knowing the criteria, it is difficult.

Thanks in advance

MD :ok:

Hello everyone.

I am hoping someone can help. I am trying to post a picture that is on my website. I have followed all the instructions in Heliport's thread about posting photos, but everytime I sent the reply, all it gives is the URL in text, not the actual picture!!!

I am starting the pull my hair out, what am I doing wrong?????

In response to previous posts will clarify who can post what. You must have shot the photo you are entering otherwise copyright issues come into play, especially if the entry is the winning one and we go to publish it in the calendar.

The image doesnt have to be technically correct, just a great looking image showing a helicopter. Thats it. No other technical type requirements. Some of the best looking helo images are the most technically incorrect.

Hope that helps.

If you don't have your own website, either use one of the free photo hosting services on the net (Photobucket.com is very easy to use) or e-mail the pic to us and we'll do the rest.

Going back to the initial post;
And each image must show the beauty of the helicopter, either static or working.
I feel those of us without the backgrounds recently posted are at a 'slight' disadvantage.
Beautiful scenery, I cannot fault, but isn't the aircraft 'just' landing, taking off, sitting there with mountain in background, etc?
The beauty of the helicopter, surely, is its versatility and not just the environment in which it is in.

Or did I just miss this as a photographic competition with a helicopter in it!

No-one's disadvantaged - apart from people like me. Even if I had easy access to stunning background scenery and an expensive camera, my photos would still only be mediocre. Some people might say they're disadvantaged because they haven't got your experience taking aviation photos. Your pics are always very good. :ok:
Remember it's still early days - and nobody's won yet. :)

407Driver & All,

Keep on posting the images. Remember as long as it has a helo in the picture then post it. If you think the helo has to be doing something, rather than just sitting somewhere with an awesome background, then think again. Some of the most amazing shots I have taken myself have been at sunrise, sunset or just seizing the moment and shooting the helo and its surroundings.

Not going to tell you what I am looking for because there are no rules. Depends on what I think of the image when I see it, thats it. ;)

So keep entering away and looking forward to seeing them. For the record there are some great images on this thread so far, keep em coming.

I'd prefer to see the ones with Orange, White and Blue. I always did like that color scheme.;)

Search as I might, I could not find an original photo of mine in O/W/B. Here's one from the coldest day of the year here this year...

One of my favorite shots, it's always nice to see the mounties when you need them.

As a kid, I dreamed of driving one of these two vehicles.

407Driver had the best of both worlds as he was a part-time Mountie just a few years ago. Before bone-headed beaurocrats took his and many other fine auxiliary officers' side-arms away.

http://www.s-92heliport.com/superhawk1.jpg

This S-92 is our #4 ship, which did the European tour (Paris last year, followed by England, Ireland, Scotland, Scandanavia, Finland, thence back to the US).

It is now modified a bit with a rear door and longer internal cabin, decked out as the VH-92 demonstrator. It has a full VIP interior, TCAS, EGPWS, Wx Radar, as well as an on-board LAN so you can cruise the internet (wireless) while flying, a full video conferencing capability via SATCOM with a tracking antenna (I think its the first such installation in a helo) and a command center for placing the calls.

With extra attention to creature comforts, it is the smoothest and quietest aircraft we have ever measured.

The golf course picture was taken last summer at a resort near Houston TX where we hosted some folks to have a demonstration flight or two.

I've been trying to contact Ned in New Zealand, but no luck so far.
He may have been called away on a rush photo assignment.
You'll know the results as soon as I do.

I've chosen the winner of Heliport's Prize, but that's an 'extra' to the main competition.
I think it's best if the winner of that is published at the same time as the others.

Apologies for the delay. Ned has been away on a photographic mission.

The quality of entries was extremely high, which made our choices very difficult.
When we got down to our 'short list', it became virtually impossible but, decisions had to be made, so here they are:

First Category: Images which show the beauty of the helicopter, either static or working

The winners, chosen by Ned - one of the world's leading aviation photographers - are:

The WINNER

http://www.helicopterservice.com.au/photos/pprune/gwmidflypast.jpg
Rapid Response

Congratulations to SilsoeSid who wins:

(1) Two year subscription to Heli Ops.

(2) Video 'The Last Great Adventure' showing the history of live deer capture in NZ by helicopter. An awesome video with plenty of "holy ****e" action in it.

(3) The award-winning book The Chopper Boys, a pictorial history of animal capture in New Zealand. Combines two books called the Chopper Boys and the Helicopter Hunters.

(4) Publication of the photograph in the 2005 Helicopters at Work calendar - and 20 copies to give to your mates!

Congratulations to 407 Driver and C4 who both win a One year subscription to Heli Ops.

__________

Second Category: MODERATOR'S PRIZE: 'The image that Heliport likes the most'

This was a very difficult choice. With so many prizes already offered in the 'beauty of the helicopter' category, I decided it was fairest to choose my winner from the entries which captured the helicopter at work, regardless of beauty, photographic or artistic skills.
The winning photograph is one of my all-time favourite helicopter 'action shots' .......

Congratulations to Canadian Rotorhead who wins a copy of The Chopper Boys - a pictorial history of animal capture in New Zealand and includes a second book 'Helicopter Hunters'.

Many thanks to you all for submitting such high quality entries.
Congratulations to the winners, and condolences to those who just missed this time.

We'll be running another competition soon. First Prize will be publication of your winning image on the cover of Heli Ops magazine.

Thanks to Ned for donating the prizes.
