Xenical for weight loss

Doctor prescribed xenical (orlistat) for my tubby brother in the lead up to the dreaded age 40 double class 1 medicals here in Oz. I won't frighten you with the gory details :yuk: but now that it's available over the counter, be careful if you're thinking about it for a quick fix after xmas/easter/school hols/birthdays/whatever.

It does appear to work, as a form of behaviour modification, (eat fat, poo yellow), but I think I'd prefer a run around the block every evening! :ugh:

Whats this all about then ? Is this a slimming drug you can take - and how does it work ?

This is straight from the product website. The bit they don't tell you is the particularly unpleasant side effects if you attempt to consume pizza, chocolate and a milkshake in one sitting (xenical one. tubby brother nil!). Hence my comment about behaviour modification - you quickly learn not to eat too much fat whilst taking the pills.

"If you eat an excessive amount of fat or calories, the excess is stored as fat by the body, resulting in weight gain. When you eat fat, your body breaks it down into its simplest components so that it can be digested.

Unlike other weight-loss drugs you may have heard about that act in the brain or central nervous system to suppress appetite or to speed up metabolism, XENICAL works in your digestive system to block about one-third of the fat in the food you eat from being digested.

Enzymes in your digestive system, called lipases, help digest (or break down) fat. When taken with meals, XENICAL attaches to the lipases and blocks them from breaking down some of the fat you have eaten.

The undigested fat cannot be absorbed and is eliminated in your bowel movements. By working this way, XENICAL helps block about one-third of the fat in the foods you eat from being absorbed by your body." :uhoh:
