Just heard that US Airways are joing the Star Alliance which is already the largest alliance with 15 airlines.

Given that Qantas have also indicated an interest where does that leave the oneworld alliance?

Hi Anne.

Just to clear up your post a little bit, the carrier that is joining the Star Alliance is not "US Airlines", but US AIRWAYS, the seventh largest American airline, who will be joining United Airlines as the second American carrier in the Star Alliance.

There are a number of benefits for having US onboard. United were up until 9/11 hoping for a merger with US leapfrogging AA as the number one American carrier. UA & US believed their networks complimented each other, and would be ideal for a merger. The regulatory authorities said no, so instead they are becoming alliance partners.

Qantas (no "u". Qantas is an abbreviation) will be unlikely to join Star as they are partly owned by BA who will not let QF slip into a rival alliance. The only thing I could see reason for QF to join Star would be for closer co-operation with Air New Zealand.

Rumour does have it however, that TAP are joining Star Alliance.

A is not for Air, or Abbreviation
A is for Aerial, and Acronym
