In another demonstration of the mind numbing shallowness western society has decended to, we had the option of watching a bunch of bubble brained, gushing, silly, burbling show biz blodgers spouting luvy sh!te at the oscars last night, fair enough, we didn't have to watch it .. .I do object to the main morning news devoting the the majority of their time to it.. .Oh god, for a small tac nuke on that place last night, this world would be a cleaner place this morning. . .. .PS, electric nose powder vendors must have made a fortune last night in hollywood.. . . . [ 25 March 2002, 09:23: Message edited by: tony draper ]

Herr Draper, until I got to the word 'oscars' I thought you were having a rant about the House of Commons telly channel there.. . My mistake....

I agree Tony. The issue of what all the actresses was wearing is a matter of supreme indifference to me, but all the TV channels (including the BBC) decided that that was this morning's most important news story.. .. .I am moderately interested in which films win the major awards, but what the hell is all the fuss about? I guess most people's lives these days are so boring they have to spend their time examining the slightly less boring lives of movie stars.. .. .Well, not me. I could not care less about the ceremony, a back slapping session for a bunch of shallow, neurotic, self important bores if you ask me.

Total WOFTAM. . .. .Oh alright, I confess - I would have felt differently if more of us skips had won!

I only watched a few minutes, flipping back and forth, however; 60 Minutes was very interesting. They did a report on how much money the US is spending on airport improvements since 9/11, but this same government is at odds over spending money to improve control and inspection of their ports.. .. .Apparently, about 6 million shipping containers enter the US every year, only 2% are searched. Luckily, they found a fellow headed for Canada in one of those containers recently, but how many more made it through? Worse still, one of those containers could carry a bomb.

Anybody with a spare 25k sitting round could have gone to Sir Elton of John's after show party.

Judging from the blurred gender lines displayed by the cast of JR Tolkien's tale, perhaps the movie should be renamed "Lord of the Ring Pieces"...

bugg smasher,. .. .Are you outing Ian McKellan? If so, you're about twenty years too late.. .. .Don't tell me the young bloke that plays Frodo is a bit bent. Old JRR would spin in his grave.. .. .TW

I'm glad I missed it.. .. .Oscars are just self serving to me, but just one person's opinion.. .. .I had friends over for dinner last night, cooked up steaks, kabobs (both chicken and steak), green squash, green peppers, red peppers, yellow squash, and mushrooms. . .. .The veggies were done in a grill wok, marinaded in Itailian dressing, the steaks and steak kobobs were done in a montreal marinade, yum.. .. .Grilled chicken breasts were done with a special lemon pepper spice obtained thru a place in Arizona.. .. .To wash it down, we had strawberry margaritas, fresh from the blender with lots-0-rum. . .For those who didn't like red berries, hooch was on order for them. . .. .Nothing like Grilling for thrilling!. .. .No worries about who got what, just friends, food, drink and merry making on the porch in dwindeling light of Sunday, then into the evening.. .. .(And I have enough left over for lunches this week hehehe ....)

To be honest with you TW, until last night I didn’t know that old Gandalf used his wand for more than just magic. Re Frodo, seems to me he’s the perfect height to rest a beer on his head. If only his Dad owned a liquor store.

Im with TD on this, what a piece of self congratulatory bullsh!t.. .. .I am also fed up to my back teeth with Black American actors using it to make a political statement. They are obviously good actors in the eyes of their peers and have been rewarded for same. Joe Public buys tickets for the films in which they appear. Isnt that good enough????? So can the gushy "Am doin this fo all ma people" crap, like any other actor they are only in it for the money!

What really gripped my wick, was while I watched the BBC breakfast news for an hour this morning, about 20 seconds was reserved for the report of 40000 redundancies at the post office!!. .. .RW-1 . .What's a kabob? Is that the same as a Kebab?. .I thought margaritas were made with tequila!. .. .Sounds nice though.

Bl00dy Oscars meant I missed evolution nine of Combat Missions Bah! Really, why is it so over-hyped. The whole evening (here) was given over to a re-broadcast of the thing which was live in the morning.. .. .$hit-gripping lowlights: Sidney Potter (apologies to Grandad in OFAH) is a tone-deaf bore. Halle Berry was only trying outdo Julia Roberts, Russell Crowe is just a scruffy git and Dame Judy is long overdue some recognition.. .. .As per every other year, I promise not to watch it next year

Er, who's the British bloke that won something or other? Why? What was he wearing?. .. .Did he shout "The British are coming!" like that Colin Welland chap? I bloody well hope not 'cos the last time signalled a collapse of the British film industry that didn't recover for over ten years.. .. .TW

All I heard was that someone called Halley Berry bawled her eyes out on recieving an oscar (which itself probabley deserved an oscar), everyone bowed down to Sydney Poityer, Robert Redford got a BJ from the hollywood mutual-admiration society, Woopi Iceberg proved how un-funny she is without a script, and Russell Crowe got another oscar for beatin the sh!t out of bad guys again.

No,no, Henry. He (I hope) actually said 'Stone the Crowe', thought to be a reference to that puffed-up bearded Aussie jerk who has been pissing us all off with his egomaniacal antics ever since he took off the Roman suit of armour.... .

Guys and Gals,. .. .I firstly have to admit that I didnt see any one the ceremony or news items as I was too busy doing more important things.... .. .You are going to slag me for putting the contrary view, but... .. .you mostly all watched it...you could have turned off or over.. .. .As its just an advertising campaign for the film industry - I think you've all been got to.. .The fact that this thread on the forum exists is testament to the effect they have on you/us.. .. .Hook line and skinker.. .1-0 to the film industry.. .. .The film industry is mostly an escapism industry, and <<<for the general public>>>, so are the oscars. Thats includes you, as you have a view on it.. .The Oscars is just a critics forum, and you have critiqued it.. .. .On a more positive note, although I'm no film buff, I did go and see 'a beautiful mind' last week, and I really, really recommend it.. .. .Much as I enjoyed JRRT as a teenager, and again at Uni (many years ago) I have to say 'the book was better', and 'a beautiful mind' was a worthy winner.. .. .See...hoisted by my own patard.
