Tonight's edition of 5th Gear turned up a treat - Mini Cooper trounced by diesel Skoda. Please excuse me while I laugh under the desk.

OK, so it was just the standard Cooper and not the S, or any of the specialist variants, and the diesel Skoda was the Fabia vRS with its 130bhp 1.9TDi. However, although the Skud has lots of grunt from a very decent oil burner, it simply doesn't have the more refined handling of the Mini, and has a tendency to wallow about when chucked into corners.

So, although I'm fairly biased towards the Skud, the result was a genuine surprise and has only encouraged Mrs WD that she wants one. B#gger!

Me, well I'd rather see them bring out a road-legal version of the WRC with it's 2.0 turbo if they insist on having a hot hatch in the range.

It appears the Lotus Elise is now on sale here in the States. The last time I asked my mechanic what he could do for me if I bought a Lotus Esprit or Elan he said, after much searching of parts books, "spark plugs". Lotus aint common over here and I have yet to see a skip (Skoda) in these parts:\ :oh:

I've got a REAL (old type) Mini that would see off the Scud... can it do 70 in second?

Heh heh heh

I was gobsmacked! Whoever would have thought it possible, a diesel (and a skoda at that) whip the ass off a mini cooper. If yer had said that 15 years ago yer would have been burned at the stake :}

"It is only marginally more embarrassing being seen getting out of the back of a sheep than it is being seen getting out of the back of a Skoda"

Well, so I am told!.

Look my diesel can keep up with the basic Mini, and that is pulling a fat-arsed Rover behind it and hasn't even been chipped to the 135 bhp it's capable of, it's only 105. The Mini manages to drag pathetic performance out of the engine for the size of car. An MG ZR is quicker than a Cooper on the same engine size!

The Lotus Elise is now exceedingly passe in the UK. So are you suggesting Hansard I be the first in the US to proclaim the Elise passe????
