ATC requests early turn airborne

My nigas,

when the tower requests (or is that instructs?) you to make an early turn airborne, what heights are we talking here? Is there a defined rule somewhere which states an early turn height AGL?

The tower can only request an early turn. You make the turn when you think it's safe to do so normally not below 300'agl.

If because of any problems you may encounter after t/off or you are busy don't give in to the pressure of the request fly the aircraft and when your ready make the turn (usually not above 500'AGL).

Remember ATC usually only asks light aircraft to make an early turn so as to get faster traffic away with minimal delay.

If you make an early turn and get into difficulties for what ever reason don't expect ATC to take the blame remember it was only a request.:hmm:

Doesn't the law state as it is at the moment, no turn shall be commenced after take-off untill 500 feet agl so if you turn before that height except in an emergency or stress of weather ( and then why did you depart ) you could be in deep sh#t, or at least an invitation for tea and bickies with your local FOI.

Point (ii) is also very relevant most companies have Terrain Clearance Departures (TCD) at places like Hobart the 30 departure reads,

Maintain Runway Heading at 250 feet but not before Departure End of Runway, turn right xxxx

If ATC request you to do it then you have the option. You can also ask for an early turn.

This can help clear the departure fan to accomodate a heavier aircraft behind in case of a go-around or for some other requirements.

You still have to clear the screen height of 50 ft I think (Can't be too sure on that one).

Also on a SID the min height for a turn is 400ft agl. Otherwise the min height is published on the plate. A visual departure is 500ft agl.

About 35 years ago at Sydney, a Beaver was told to turn left after take off and promptly flew into a hut.

After that, the phrasing was changed to turn left/right as soon as safely possible. This then left it to the pilot's discretion and if he waited to 500 ft, then so be it.:rolleyes:
