View Full Version : Hitchhikers Guide- The movie

Finally looks as if Hitchhiker will make it onto the big screen.

I doubt it will be as good as the radio series but perhaps will renew interest and further the legend.

Will the rewriting mean that the cricket game will be replaced by a baseball one and Islington by Petaluma (after all, we all know what Hollywood does to history :} )

16th Apr 2004, 09:20
.....and Ford Prefect will become Ford Mustang? Coffee will replace tea? What the hell will Zaphod Beeblebrox become!!! :uhoh:

Hmmm, I'm not going to pass judgement before it appear but.... Hitchhikers was something special and whilst it had cult status in many countries, it was always essentially a British thing. Even the aliens were Brits, despite Zaphod's American accent. Marvin the Paranoid Android, Slartibartfast, Deep Thought, the hyper-intelligent mice and the rest may all have come from other planets but they were essentially Brits.

Will Disney be able to resist the urge to turn them all into American aliens?

'Tis indeed a shame that Adams died whilst writing the screenplay as I doubt he would have allowed the film to be Americanised too much. Then again, it would never have been made I suppose as we Brits can only make films about East End gangsters and abysmal comedies.

What the hell will Zaphod Beeblebrox become

George W Bush ??

Before Douglas Adams died, he did a radio interview in which he mentioned that Disney wanted to get involved. I do hope Disney are not involved

And presumably such classic lines as "Or I shall rend thee in the gobberworts with my blurglecruncheon, see if I don't!" will become "Back off or yo gonna die Motherf***er"...

Still, at least that way they get to save the galaxy, shag Trillion AND invent a cure for cancer from the product of 6 and 7.

16th Apr 2004, 11:08
Sorry Biggles, Disney are involved.

Mos Def, Zooey Deschanel, Sam Rockwell

These sound more like characters than actors...

They are bound to completely [email protected] it up, but I'll go see it, and Thunderbirds.

"So long, and thanks for all the freedom fries"... :uhoh:

This is not the Battle of Britain that we are going to get our mucky little pawprints all over now, is it?

Douglas Adams, God rest his soul, with his fully developed sense of the absurd, was probably completely in the loop as to what the philistines (Don't shoot, moderator! That's written with a small 'p' and has nothing to do with You Know Where.) of Hollywood were going to do to his books.

I bet he had to sit in script conferences answering requests from morons such as, 'We don't want to change anything. We love your stuff, really. But we just want you to make Marvin a little bit cheerier. Just for the children....' He was probably just gritting his teeth and thinking of his millions.

I fully anticipate going into a McDonalds near me anytime soon and finding little plastic Beeblebroxes and madly grinning Marvins being used to get brats to part with their money. Sigh....

There are no two ways about this.

The Yanks will make a completely God-awful abominable f**k-up of The Guide, which will bear absolutely no resemblance to the original story other than in name, which name it will shame forever and a day.

Imagine, if you can resist shuddering for long enough, what would have happened to the "Rings" if Disney or Hollywood had been let loose on it??!

The Guide is sacred to our race, and needs to be made in Pomgolia, with as many of the original radio cast as possible.

:uhoh: :ugh:

16th Apr 2004, 12:05
Who the hell are those actors?

I would have loved to have seen Heather Graham play Trillian.............

16th Apr 2004, 12:23
would have loved to have seen Heather Graham

Just Heather Graham !!! Yum

But as Trillian ??

How about Jim Carey as Marvin ?

More at Greg's Upcoming Movies (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hp&cf=prev&id=1808404419). Looks like Marvin's been downsized....

Mayhap the motive is revenge: forgive me, as I'm quoting from memory, but wasn't Los Angeles described as "so many square miles of American Express junk mail, but without the moral and social depth"?

Well, after all, Zaphod's just this guy, you know?

I refer people to this page (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mjs2000/) for accurate news on the movie.
Don't forget to check out the FAQ (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mjs2000/movie.htm).

It's a British director and a British company who are making it.
Only three of the cast named so far are Americans, and two of those play characters who are aliens.
(Trillian was played by an American in the TV series, so there's precedence!)
Shooting starts Monday.

Shooting starts Monday

How appropriate for a film featuring Americans.

Still, we could be talking about the crisis in the US Porn industry

I think you ought to know that I'm feeling rather depressed about this.

Still, I suppose there's an infinite improbabiltity that it might be a success.

I was excited for all of the 20 seconds it took me to see that itís a Disney project. Make no mistake about it; itís going to be horrible. An absolute butcher job.

I fully anticipate going into a McDonalds near me anytime soon and finding little plastic Beeblebroxes and madly grinning Marvins being used to get brats to part with their money. Sigh....

Cringe!! I didnít even think of that, but you are absolutely right.

I'm off to vomit now.

16th Apr 2004, 19:09
Bill Nighy as Slartib artfast will work though, imho.

i would have said (and this could be a controversial choice) Eddie Izzard as Zaphod Beeblebrox and Stephen Fry as Ford Prefect.

As for it being a disney project, ugh dont make me vomit. the only company who could take 16th century colonialism and pre-teen marriage (pocahontas) and make it into a saccarine socially acceptable film is not fit to wipe the boots of douglas adams.

And if its successful (which it will be if disney money is involved, what with all the tie ins and merchandise) we can look forward to year after year of sequels. HHGTG 3 - Marvin's Revenge

I think, in response to this "news", that one can only quote from the fourth book in the trilogy, God's final message to His Creation. Written, as I recall, in letters of fire in the Quentulus Quazgar Mountains:

We Apologise for the Inconvenience

With a bit of luck I will at least have spoilt the ending of HHGTTG4.
