I have IR test on friday and have flown a mock test today.

My question is,

When flying in the hold the drift is 3x outbound 1x in bound but what drift is needed when you leave hold pattern and go outbound for proceedure, this being from direct the beacon and also when extending outbound leg of hold.

It is making me confused and my instructors have given me a different way each.

I have not flown so much by hand flying or without the assistance of a computer for few years.

Time is nearly here for test so need help.

The way I was thought to do the hold is as follows:

3x drift if the wind is compressing your hold
2x drift if the wind is expanding your hold

ALWAYS 1x drift when you go beacon outbound ... therefore, when your 1 minute (wind corrected) is over, you switch from the 3 or 2x drift you were flying in the hold to a 1x drift. Worked all the time. At least thats what Capt. Ball used to teach!

Good luck for the test!:ok:

Yup, that's exactly what I was taught too.

Once in the hold or a direct (sector 3) join: 3x drift outbound, ie 1x for the outbound leg and 1x for each of the turns.

A parallel (sector 1) or offset (sector 2) join: 2x drift outbound, ie 1x for the outbound leg and 1x for the turn onto inbound.

Once beacon outbound on the procedure allow 1x outbound and 1x inbound.

Don't forget to correct timing in the hold on the outbound leg and also when beacon outbond if the procedure is timed instead of DME.

Just did my I/R last month, what a relief to have jumped another hurdle.
Hope this helps. Good Luck.
